John Doan - Wayfarer (1999)

La música de John Doan tiene propiedades reparadoras. Escuchar es como emprender un peregrinaje interior. Wayfarer es una peregrinación musical que refleja un viaje real a lugares sagrados en las Islas Británicas. Las primeras notas parecen una invitación a emprender el viaje. “¿Adónde vamos en verdad? ¿Y por qué?" Al escuchar esta música, podemos ir a nuestro interior para recordar un lugar antiguo donde lo temporal parece tocar lo eterno. Los lugares conocidos como "lugares sagrados" por los cristianos celtas les dieron este sentido. Podemos retroceder en el tiempo, reducir nuestro ritmo frenético y reflexionar sobre las alegrías de la simplicidad. Más que un CD, esta es una lección de historia y meditación guiada en uno, gracias a las extensas notas del libreto. Cada pieza musical recibe una página en las notas con una cita adecuada para la meditación y una explicación del lugar sagrado que inspiró su composición. Aunque uno puede escuchar sin leer el folleto y disfrutar de la música, se vuelve más significativo seguir leyendo. Definitivamente merece un lugar más alto que solo música de fondo.

La alta calidad de este CD es evidente en sus variados e interesantes arreglos y en la ejecución magistral, sensible y expresiva de todos los instrumentistas. El sonido único de la guitarra arpa de 20 cuerdas es a la vez poderoso e íntimo, evocando una atmósfera de misterio y maravilla. La ejecución precisa y virtuosa y la sincronización impecable con flexibilidad musical siempre son evidentes. Un tono tan sorprendente, tanto en rangos bajos, ricos y resonantes como en notas altas, claras y cristalinas. A veces prevalece un ambiente medieval, como en “Festival”,  La mayoría de las pistas inspiran a la reflexión, pero esta, con su buen humor, energía de percusión y una profunda cualidad gutural al sonido del arpa, hace que uno quiera chasquear los dedos y bailar. Entre varios instrumentos antiguos, también aparece una viola portuguesa.
